So, probably 99% of K98's produced by any manufacturer after 1941 or so were issued with laminate stocks. By '43 the Germans had found that laminate stocks were cheaper and easier to produce and they stood up better to weather. Look at the photos of my guns and you'll see they have hardwood stocks. See the striping in your stock? That's the glue that's holding together the laminate pieces. Yours also has a laminate stock which is the more common stock variation of the time. Things get a little squirrely once Mauser - and a few other builders - started using larger blocks, so the above is a broad generalization. Anyway, the blocks typically ran from 1 thru 9999, then 1a-9999a, then 1b-9999b, etc. By '43 Mauser was using larger blocks than that.
German serial numbering during the war typically ran in blocks of 10,000. They also made P.38's and P.08's as well as some other stuff too. It's the original Mauser factory and made the most K98's during the war.
I've had a couple byf43's.īyf was the WWII factory code for Mauser Werke Oberndorf am Neckar (river). Please post more pictures of the gun and I'll be able to tell you a lot about them. Fully matching examples are worth at least $1500 and up to $2500 or so. The last byf43 I sold went for $1300, but it had a mismatched upper handguard. Tl dr The 8mm round will go through the average house cat or rhinoceros, so don't shoot it in the 'burbs The remmington 700 has nearly the same action as the K98, so for all intents and purposes it is a modern rifle. K98Operator has the value pinned down pretty well for a matched gun. A little combat dammage won't take too much away from a battle rifle's value. If you want to fire it, buy modern ammo to avoid corrosion and oil it well for storage. Get them checked out by a gunsmith before you fire either one. My grandpa had one of these in excellent condition, likely collected from a young german who never fired it in combat because it has the cleanest rifling I have ever seen in one, and I've looked at about a half dozen at gun shows. This means that if they were not scrupulously cleaned last time they were shot or even if they were shot a lot, the bore is probably pitted. Despite springtime_poontang's assertion, the only shortcoming of the K98 IMHO is the lack of a chrome plated barrel. Remove the bolt and look down the bore with the lever at the rear right of the reciever.
